Full Description
Milestone marking Fakenham 19 miles and Norwich 5 miles and also incorporating an OS benchmark. One of 12 surviving milestones along the former Norwich to Fakenham turnpike. It was created in 1823 and was disturnpiked in 1880. The route of the turnpike is unknown however the First Edition Ordnance Survey map shows that it followed the same route as the present A1067.
(S1) gives a description of this and other milestones along this route.
D. Holburn (HES), 20 December 2011.
The mileposts on the Norwich to Fakenham road that have rounded head plates (when they haven't been broken off) all have an anomaly, in that the Norwich distance has been repeated under the parish name so that, in this instance it appears to read "Taverham 5". Unfortunately no minute books have survived from the Turnpike Trust, so we don't know whether it was a mistake in the casting, or deliberate. If the Taverham post still had its head plate, it would read Norwich 5 (S2).
D. Gurney (HES). 18 March 2014.
