Summary

Former site of one of 14 surviving milestones along the former Norwich to Scole Turnpike. This turnpike was created in 1768-1769 and was disturnpiked in 1874. The stone was recorded as lost around 2006. A test pit excavated at this location in 2019 revealed no evidence of the milestone.

One of 14 surviving milestones along the former Norwich to Scole Turnpike, marking Norwich 9 miles and Ipswich 34 miles. This turnpike was created in 1768/1769, running from the junction with the Norwich to Thetford Turnpike just south of St Stephen's Gate to Scole bridge on the Suffolk border, and lasted for 106 years before being disturnpiked in 1874.

The Milestone Society recorded the stone as lost in 2006.

January-February 2019. Test Pit.
Excavation of test pit at last recorded location of milestone ahead of proposed junction improvement works.
This revealed no evidence of the milestone. An electricity cable powering street lighting was observed suggesting that the milestone was potentially relocated at the time this was installed.
