Map

This milestone is one of 5 surviving milestones in the Norfolk section of the Cambridge, Ely and Downham Market turnpike, which was created in 1762, linking Cambridge, Ely and Soham, before being extended in 1770 to Littleport and Downham Market.

This milestone is likely to be one of the earliest on this turnpike, being a triangular plan stone post, with the distances to Ely and Downham Market repeated on large metal plates. However, this particular milestone is missing the metal plates.

The inscription reads:
LHS: HILGAY 3/SOUTHERY 6/ELY 17;
RHS: LYNN 11.

(S1) gives further information on this turnpike and the milestones along it.
