Summary

Metal-detecting in 2011 recovered two Late Iron Age coin hoards, totalling some forty-one coins, found in two discrete areas.

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Before 15 November 2011. Metal detecting.
41 Late Iron Age coins (6 gold, 34 silver and 1 copper alloy). These coins were found in two discrete areas; the gold coins at [1] and the silver coins at [2] - suggesting they are likely to represent the scattered components of two hoards. The smaller group comprises 5 gold staters and 1 base stater, while the second probable hoard comprises 32 silver units, 2 fractional silver units and 1 copper alloy unit. All but the copper alloy unit are issues of the Iceni.
See lists in file.
These two coin hoards were declared Treasure at inquest (Treasure case 2012 T71) and subsequently acquired by Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2014.93). See updated Treasure report in file.
M. Chester-Kadwell (HES), 20 February 2012 and E. Darch (HES), 5 February and 18 April 2013 and 14 July 2014. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 13 June 2020 and 15 May 2024.

Other finds previously detailed under this record are now recorded under NHER 54919. The mapped extent of this record has also been amended to better reflect the provenance of the Iron Age coins and to avoid confusion with NHER 54919 [3].
