Map

One of 8 surviving milestones along the former King's Lynn, Downham Market and Stoke Ferry turnpike. This turnpike was set up in 1770 and ran from South Gate, King's Lynn to East Walton, Narborough, Stoke Ferry and Downham Market, however, milestones have only survived along the latter two routes.

This milestone is unique along this turnpike, as it is the only one not of the gravestone-shaped series. Instead, it consists of two metal plates fixed to a stone post. The inscription is also different to that of the other milestones, reading: "Wimbotsham/6 F. to the/Checker/in Downham".

(S1) gives further information on this turnpike and the milestones along it.
