One of 16 surviving milestones along the Wells to Dersingham road, which never became a turnpike but was an important route linking the coastal ports and villages and it was used by mail coaches which ran from Cambridge to Ely, King's Lynn and Wells.

The milestones along this route are of 3 different styles. This milestone is gravestone-shaped, only the distance written in large numbers on the face facing the road. The parish and destination is not written on this stone.
