Full Description
An 18th century milestone recorded by the Milestone Society. This is a tall, rectangular or square sectioned pillar with a rounded top and inscriptions on 3 of the 4 sides.
The inscription reads:
LHS: "ANMER".
CENTRE: "XI/MILES/to/LYNN/XV/to/Wells/X.to/BURNHAM/JC".
RHS: "III/Miles to/Houghton/VI to/Maffingham/XV to/Swaffham".

The Amner milestone has the date 1764 inscribed at its base and is believed to be Norfolk's oldest recorded milestone, pre-dated only by the 1750 Holt Obelisk. The stone was installed by order of a private benefactor, James Coldham of Amner Hall, whose initials can be found at the stone's base. It was reputedly removed and buried at the outbreak of World War Two for security reasons and reinstated closer to the road shortly after the war ended. Local residents can remember congregating around it, having 'a puff from their clay pipes and a mardle' and sharpening their shutknives on the stone, which has left an indentation forming part of its history (S2).
The Amner milestone was the sixtieth milestone to be renovated under the auspices of the Norfolk Jubilee Milestone Project to commemorate the Queen's sixty-year reign (S3). As part of these celebrations, HRH Prince Charles painted the "XI" on the central face of the stone on 05 December 2012 (S4).
Unfortunately the stone suffered some damage shortly following this event, but it has since been repaired and reinstated in a more secure location behind the stone garden wall (moved from TF 74179 29469 to TF 74183 29467).
