Full Description
May 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of a possible medieval moated site, or possible enclosure, are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to the west of St Peter’s Hill, Morley. It is notable that the road, which is depicted on Faden’s Map of Norfolk (S3), appears to respect the position of the potential moat. The site is centred on TM 0653 9908, and the moated area itself measures a maximum of 68m x 29m internally, 73m x 34 externally. It is trapezoidal in shape, being wider at its western end, and the moat is comparatively narrow, only measuring up to 2.8m in width. The moat has been filled in on most recent photographs (S2).
Various fieldwalking and metal-detecting events have taken place in the vicinity (NHER 30532-30545) and a possible medieval settlement has been identified through fieldwalking to the west (NHER 30539), where earthworks of a possible enclosure and trackway are also visible on aerial photographs (NHER 54735). It has not been possible to further examine the existing records for this area, however, as this is without the scope of the current NMP project.
