Map

March 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of former medieval to post medieval field boundaries and divisions are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4) to the east of Tacolneston Hall. The site is centred on TM 1469 9516. None of this site has been mapped as part of NMP, as for the large part, they are either depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 to 1891) (S5), or follow the same general pattern. The Tithe map for this area was not available at the time of survey and it is probable that this source would provide more map detail of some, if not all, of the features visible on the aerial photographs.
The western part of the site, centred on TM 1450 9515, consists of a series of low earthworks and cropmarks of a short section of track and/or hollow way and associated boundaries are visible on aps (S1-S3). The site is None of these features have been mapped as the main components are depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1889 to 1891) (S4), and the track is still defined by a narrow hedge in 1946 (S1). These features may only be of post medieval date, although a medieval to post medieval origin is likely given the context. The eastern part of the site, centred on TM 1475 9513, consists of a series of parallel field divisions, fossilising the former medieval and early post medieval field pattern. Some of these survive as earthworks as late as 1972 (S3).
