Summary

The cropmarks of former boundaries ditches of unknown, but possible medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs within the northern part of Oxehaghe Deer Park (NHER 52767). These ditches have the appearance of medieval to post medieval field boundaries, but are not depicted on any of the available historic maps for the area. It is therefore possible that these boundaries relate to the medieval landscape the pre-dates the establishment of the deer park.

Map

March 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of former boundaries ditches of unknown, but possible medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) within the northern part of Oxehaghe Deer Park (NHER 52767). The site is centred on TM 1089 9978. These ditches have the appearance of medieval to post medieval field boundaries, but are not depicted on any of the available historic maps for the area, for example (S3-S4). It is therefore possible that these boundaries relate to the medieval landscape the pre-dates the establishment of the deer park. See NHER 25887 and 57360 for discussion of early medieval strip fields excavated within the area of the park. It must also be noted that some other fragmentary field boundaries, visible as cropmarks to the south, within the area of the park have tentatively been interpreted as being of Iron Age date, see NHER 57359 for details.
