Summary

A pond with a linear extension to the west is visible on modern aerial photographs. Documentary sources relating to a nearby 16th century and later building (NHER 35780) have suggested that the pond is the remains of a medieval or post-medieval moat related to this building. However, this is unlikely as the linear extension does not appear to have been constructed until sometime after 1880.

2007-2009. Norfolk Historic Buildings Group Research.
Documentary research was undertaken in order to complement a building survey undertaken at No. 57 Norwich Road (NHER 35780). 18th century sale documents relating to the house appear to suggest that the antiquity of the building was supported by the presence of a 'partly surviving moat' within the property.
The remains of this moat are visible on modern Ordnance Survey maps and Google Earth photographs as a pond with a linear extension to the west, lying to the north and north-east of the buildings.

November 2013. Documentary Research.
Documentary research undertaken prior to excavation of three trial trenches immediately south of this pond (see NHER 60778) noted that the western arm to this pond is not depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S2) and therefore was not created until after 1880.
See report (S3) for further information.
