Summary

Following a desk-based assessment in 2008, which highlighted the potential of the site to contain evidence for prehistoric, Roman and post medieval activity, a magnetic survey was carried out in March 2011, which identified several linear anomalies thought to represent a field system, which was confirmed by trial trenching in August 2011 to be post-medieval in date. The evaluation trenching also indicated slight evidence of a low-level scatter of prehistoric activity.

Map

January 2008. Desk-based Assessment.
This assessment highlighted the potential of the site to contain evidence for prehistoric, Roman and post medieval activity.
See report (S1) for further details.
E. Bales (HES) 17 September 2012.

March 2011. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey of proposed development site.
This survey identified several linear anomalies thought to represent a post-medieval field system, and a large possible buried earthwork or paleochannel.
See report (S2) for further details.
E. Bales (HES) 9 July 2012.

August 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
This work identified slight evidence of a low-level scatter of prehistoric activity, including ditches, a pit and a posthole which were dated to the prehistoric period. The evaluation trenching demonstrated that the geophysical survey (S2) successfully identified the larger or more recent features, likely to be post medieval field boundaries, but that the smaller features likely to be of earlier date were not identified.
See report (S3) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2023.97).
E. Bales (HES) 9 July 2012. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 12 July 2023.
