Summary

The earthworks and soilmarks of a series of major boundary ditches and banks of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the northeast of Wattlefield Hall (NHER 15590). Consultation of the 1797 Faden map indicates that the more substantial banks and ditches visible on aerial photographs acted as common edge boundaries defining the western extent of Ashwell Thorpe Common. It is possible that one of the boundaries also acted as a boundary for the medieval deer park to the immediate northwest (NHER 9945 & 52767).
