Full Description
April 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and soilmarks of an area of boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date (S1-S2) to the north of Wattlefield Hall (NHER 15590), Wymondham. The site is centred on TM 1111 9734. These boundaries are not depicted on the available historic maps, such as the 1839 Wymondham Tithe map (S3), but are likely to have formed part of the surrounding boundary pattern within the park, some of which are likely to pre-date the establishment of the post medieval Hall and park. Medieval and Saxon finds have been recovered from this general area (NHER 9925 & 12313). Given the differing alignment of the earthwork ditch, and/or drainage channel, recorded within the eastern part of the site, it is possible that these boundaries represent more than one phase. Its apparent shared alignment with fragmentary cropmarks recorded to the north of unknown but possible Roman date, must also be highlighted.
S. Horlock (NMP), 12 April 2012.
