Full Description
July 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a square enclosure and associated fields of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Deopham Green Airfield (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 0240 0001. The enclosure, which is 65m across, is only visible on one set of aerial photographs (S1) and the cropmarks have an extremely regular and crisp appearance, in particular the southern section, perhaps suggesting something of agricultural or recent origin. However no reasonable non-archaeological explanation for the cropmarks could be suggested and an archaeological origin must be considered most likely. It must be noted that the cropmarks of the apparent associated field system were quite faint in places, and combined with the presence of linear cropmarks of agricultural and geological origin within the confines of the site, therefore only the most obvious ditches were mapped. The date of the enclosure is uncertain, although a Roman date seems most likely given the morphology. There are Roman finds within the general vicinity (NHER 34591, 2982).
