Full Description
July 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The former earthworks and soilmarks of an area of medieval to post medieval fields and enclosures are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Little Ellingham Road, Hingham (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 0151 0004.
The majority of the boundaries were visible as earthwork ditches in 1946 (S1-S2), however the traces of plough levelled banks and possible platforms were visible on soilmarks on later photography (S3). One of the boundaries mapped is depicted on the 1841 Tithe map (S4), but has been included within the mapping as it is integral to the other earthworks visible on the aerial photographs that pre-date the historic maps.
The ditches defining the two sub-rectangular enclosures within the southeastern part of the site, centred on TM 0158 9990, are noticeably better defined, with greater width and depth, than the rest of the earthworks. This could suggest that these relate to areas of significant activity, perhaps domestic, therefore representing a toft.
S. Horlock (NMP), 24 July 2012.
