Map

April 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of an area of medieval to post medieval land boundaries and allotments and a possible building platform are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to the north of Holly Farm, Silfield. The site is centred on TM 1325 9949. A possible raised area or platform at TM 1318 9944 may be visible within the southwestern enclosed area in 1946 (S1), but this was not mapped due to uncertainty over its presence. It may be that the presence of well-defined ditches around the land were giving the false impression of height within the enclosed area. However the general appearance of the site is that the earthworks could relate to a building platform, or toft, with associated cultivation areas defined by ditches. The irregular linear feature mapped within the northeastern part of the site is visible as a broad lodged cropmark on some aerial photographs and therefore may relate to an underlying drainage feature, but was mapped due to its possible association with the earthworks and the fact that it appears to underlie boundaries depicted on the 1839 Wymondham Tithe map (S4). Comparison of the location of the site with Faden’s map of 1797 (S5) would perhaps indicate that this site may represent a small area of common-edge settlement and/or stock enclosures to the immediate east of Silfield Common.
