Summary

Two fields to the south of Carr Lane were excavated as part of a trial trench evaluation in 2011. Prehistoric pot-boiler material and features and a possible Roman farmstead were encountered, as well as possible medieval and post medieval enclosures which may relate to cropmarks previously recorded in the northern field (NHER 52465). The southern field also contained cropmarks of possible glacial origin (NHER 53284).

February 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Archaeological remains were identified in 52 of the 94 trenches excavated.
There were two main areas of archaeological interest - a spread of pot-boiler material and associated features located in the northern field, and a possible Roman farmstead consisting of a corn-dryer, ditches and a pit, situated on the edge of the northern and southern fields.
The northern field formed part of Poringland heath in the post medieval period. Possible medieval enclosures, perhaps representing intakes into the common land of the heath, and post medieval enclosures dating to the enclosure of the heath in the early 19th century were recorded on the site, and may relate to cropmarks formerly observed in the area (NHER 52465). Cropmarks of a probable glacial origin had also been observed in the southern field (NHER 53284).
See report (S2) for further details.
