Summary

During the construction of Rouen Road in 1962 a number of medieval pits were discovered, as well as some inhumations, which were probably part of St Martin at Bale churchyard (believed to have stood across what is now the top of Rouen Road). A number of objects were also recovered, including medieval and later pottery sherds, and tiles and bricks.

1962. During construction of new road (Rouen Road) from King Street to Cattle Market Street.
Inhumations, probably part of St Martin at Bale.
Medieval and later pottery, tiles and bricks, small metal object.
Pit I: contained one medieval sherd; post medieval sherds included two similar to jug of 1674 at Strangers Hall. Pipe stems, mortar, brick fragments, oyster shells.
Pit II: three sherds (two early medieval; one ?15th-16th century).
Pit III: 15th, 16th century sherds; 17th century sherds, brick, tile, iron slag, Nuremburg tokens, two ?bronze pins.
Pit IV: One sherd and green glaze pottery 15th-16th century; one sherd brown glaze; fragment of pin, tile, brick fragment, iron slag, oyster shell.
