Map

September 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible medieval to post medieval ditches and possible enclosures are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4) on land surrounding St Ethelbert's Church, Larling. It is possible that they relate to medieval enclosures, although some may also relate to post medieval drainage ditches. The site is centred on TL 9832 8958.
An enclosure may be visible centred on TL 9831 8971, measuring approximately 44m by 44m internally, although it is difficult to be certain of this since it is situated at the field corner.
An earthwork survey referred to in the NMR record for NHER 30282 to the south (TL 98 NE 61) identified a possible moated site centred on TL 983 894, although this could only be identified as one possible earthwork ditch, perhaps related to drainage. A second moated site has been identified to the north (NHER 14156), but this could not be positively identified from the aerial photographs.
Certainly the field in which they are sited has produced a wealth of medieval and multi-period finds (NHER 22978, 31402), as has that to the south-west (31044).
E. Bales (NMP), 12 September 2012.
