Summary

Earthworks of possible post medieval drainage ditches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs to the north east of St Andrew's Church, Illington, Wretham. They have previously been described as possible Early Saxon houses (NHER 19706), but are more likely to be modern drainage ditches or, although less likely, possible medieval tofts.

Map

October 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible post medieval drainage ditches are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S5) to the north east of St Andrew's Church, Illington, Wretham. They have previously been described as possible Early Saxon houses (NHER 19706), but are more likely to be modern drainage ditches or, although less likely, possible medieval tofts.
The site is centred on TL 9530 9006, and consists of a series of roughly parallel north-south ditches which appear to run into drainage ditches and between large natural ponds (S1), and are very likely to relate to land drainage. The presence of some very similar linear earthworks approximately 330m to the west would also confirm drainage taking place in this locality.
