Summary

The cropmarks of a group of multiphase ditches, field boundaries, trackways and a possible ring ditch are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Coltishall airfield. Some components of the site follow broadly the same direction as medieval to post medieval field boundaries that pre-date the establishment of the airfield. Although very few of them are depicted on the 1828 Scottow Enclosure map, suggesting that they are either medieval or early post medieval in date. Although it must be noted that many of these boundaries are also either perpendicular or parallel to the line of the Roman road (NHER 2796) that runs through the site. Nearby surface finds in the area attest to a level of Roman activity in this general area. A possible small ring ditch has been included within this site, although its date and significance is uncertain. It is possible that it relates to nearby prehistoric and/or Roman sites (for example NHER 36729 and 57991) or could equally relate to medieval to post medieval activity in the area, for example a stackstand or similar feature.
