Full Description
August 2012.
The vegetation marks and slight earthworks of boundaries, some of which may be medieval to post medieval in date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) to the south of part of Coltishall Airfield and the Prison site. The site is centred on TG 2549 2291. Although some of the linear marks may feasibly relate to twentieth century activity. A series of defensive features are visible in this area in 1946 (S4), although none definitely appear to match up directly with the mapping. Although it may be that they relate to similar features dating to the post World War Two era at the airfield. The northern ditch, which shows as a slight earthwork, follows broadly the same alignment as the medieval to post medieval boundaries on the 1841 Coltishall map (S5), and it seems likely that this boundary is also of this date. The angled bank and ditch like feature mapped to the south is of uncertain archaeological origin and may relate to relatively recent activity, although it may be overlain by the northern and potentially medieval to post medieval boundary, although this is not certain.
