Summary

An archaeological evaluation in 2011 at Wells Wondy Lane recorded several archaeological features which seem to suggest two main foci of activity on the site; prehistoric to the north, and Anglo-Saxon and medieval closer to the adjacent roads on the southern sde. A subsequent watching brief largely confirmed these findings.

Map

February 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development. Twelve trial trenches excavated. Contexts 1-56.
Several archaeological features were encountered, the majority of which were located in the southern part of the site. These consisted of two field boundaries and a large hollow which contained sherds of Early Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery.
A small post hole located in the north of the area contained several sherds of Beaker period pottery, and it is possible that this feature may be associated with the Bronze Age barrows to the north and east of the development area.
See report (S1) for details.
E. Ford (HES), 12 October 2012.

June-September 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of agricultural and office buildings.
No archaeological features were visible, apart from a subsoil layer found to be the true extent of the 'large hollow' described above during the evaluation. Only three sherds of pottery were recovered (1 Late Saxon, 2 post-medieval).
See report (S2) for details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.498).
E. Ford (HES), 12 October 2012. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 16 May 2019.
