Full Description
May 2012. Watching Brief
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the replacement of an existing gas pipe.
The hole excavated closest to the property itself revealed demolition make up deposits containing flint and mortar lumps. This material is likely to have resulted from the rebuilding of No. 53 in the 19th century, which was necessitated by the collapse of the original house.
The three holes dug within and close to the street itself revealed cobble surfaces of probable late 19th-century to early 20th-century date. These surfaces were sealed by a variety of make-up layers, including crushed mortar, sands and cinder waste. The only finds recovered during this work were a single sherd of post-medieval pottery and a piece of lead waste.
See report (S1) for further details.
