Map

May 2010-February 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a new fire station.
The removal of tarmac and underlying hardcore layers revealed natural sand deposits, suggesting the site had suffered at least a degree of truncation in the past.
Two features were visible in the sides of the foundation trenches, both of which contained ceramic building material of either late post-medieval or modern date. One was clearly a substantial north-to-south aligned ditch, this feature being observed in at least two locations. The second feature was of a less certain nature and may have been either a pit or a narrow ditch.
No finds were retained.
See report (S1) for further details.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.608).
