Full Description
February 2012. Geophysical Survey.
A magnetometer survey of proposed sub-station site.
This survey identified seven in-filled ponds as well as former field boundaries and field drains. The ponds, which appear on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S2) have been interpreted as possible clay extraction pits dug to provide raw material to the post-medieval brick kiln (NHER 36525) located to the northwest of this site.
See report (S1) for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 23 October 2012.
May 2012. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed sub-station site.
Six of the seven trenches revealed archaeologically significant remains, although all of the features identified are of probable post-medieval or modern date. Several ditches were identified, at least two of which appear to correspond with boundaries marked on 19th-century maps. A number of the other linear features were found to ceramic drains and are therefore of probable late Victorian to mid 20th-century date.
Three large, backfilled clay extraction pits or ponds were also identified, these corresponding with features marked on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map. As these features are not marked on any earlier maps it is likely that they date to the latter half of the 19th century. According to the landowner these pits or ponds were visible features in the landscape until well into the 20th century.
Finds were limited to three post-medieval brick fragments.
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 25 August 2015.
