Full Description
March 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a fragmentary field system of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs to the immediate east of Pilgrim’s Farm, Wymondham. The site is centred on TM 1003 9745. These ditches were formerly recorded under NHER 18314, which is the number for a ring ditch, potentially representing the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, that these ditches appear to be grouped around. One of the possible ditches/field boundaries appears to abut up to the ring ditch. It is important to note that this ditch and another to the immediate south nominally have the appearance of forming an oval enclosure or long-barrow type site that is overlain by the ring ditch at one end. However it was felt that this was likely to be an optical illusion created by the numerous agricultural marks in this area and the resulting disturbance in the marks of archaeological origin. Due to these frequent agriculturally derived marks in the area of the site a note of caution must be applied to the above interpretation as it is possible that some of the ditch-like features mapped are also of agricultural origin.
