Full Description
January-May 2010. Geophysical survey.
Magnetometer survey of two areas, one at the north-western end of the field (Area 7b) and the other in the eastern half of the site (Area 7a).
No anomalies of obvious archaeological significance were identified.
Linear cultivation edge anomalies were present along the northern and southern margins of the field.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
P. Watkins (HES), 25 March 2021.
December 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Phase II).
The trial trenches excavated revealed six ditches and a post medieval post hole. Very little dating information was recovered from the site. One ditch contained two undated iron nails and had a very compacted gravel and sand fill which suggests it may have been a wheel rut. Two other ditches in the west of the site may represent a boundary maintained over time. No evidence of the earthwork bank previously identified in aerial photographs (NHER 54531) was recorded.
See report (S3) for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 30 October 2012.
January 2020-March 2022. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping along narrow strips adjacent to western and southern edges of field, along route of new water pipeline (Areas 2 and 3 respectively).
No archaeologically-significant remains were recorded, although this was potentially due to the fact that the topsoil strip was relatively shallow, with only between 0.2m and 0.4m of soil removed – which potentially left enough overburden intact to mask any remains present.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 19 January 2026.
