Map

November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of possible medieval to post medieval enclosures, trackways, field boundaries or drainage ditches, possibly related to Little Breckles deserted medieval village (NHER 12152) are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4) to the north of Shropham Hall.
The site is centred on TL 9682 9393 and consists of several earthwork ditches and several areas of possible banks, some of which could be interpreted as possible house platforms, particularly those to the centre of the site at TL 9679 9384.
It is possible that many of the ditch features relate to post medieval drainage ditches and are not, in fact, archaeological in nature, but they have been mapped due to their proximity to the recorded site of Little Breckles deserted medieval village, Shropham (NHER 12152).
In May 1977, Davidson and B Cushion discovered a site to the south of the earthworks visible on the aerial photographs, extending from TL 96909375 to TL 96669370, following the slope contours. They identified house platforms, ditches and possible enclosure banks in pasture. The mounds and hollows at TL 9680 9390, which are likely to be those I have mentioned above, were interpreted during the earthwork survey (S5) as probably periglacial.
It should also be noted that some of the ditches described above are only visible on one photographic frame which is undated and does not have a stereo pair (S1), and it is therefore difficult to be certain of their nature. The rectification of this frame was also imperfect, so their exact location should be viewed with a hint of caution also.
