Summary

Excavation in advance of redevelopment recorded a small number of archaeological features in the eastern portion of this area. One possible Prehistoric ditch contained burnt flint and could be associated with larger field systems identified as cropmarks elsewhere in this field (NHER 54929). Three pits contained 19th century pottery, indicating low levels of activity during this period. This area may have been heathland throughout much of the past.

Map

October-November 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The twelve trenches excavated revealed a ditch and several pits in the eastern portion of the site. The ditch could not be securely dated, but its alignment does not follow any modern field boundaries and it contained burnt flint which could indicate use in the prehistoric period. It may be associated with larger field systems identified as cropmarks elsewhere in this field (NHER 54929). Three of the pits contained 19th century pottery, indicating low levels of activity during this period. This area may have been heathland throughout much of the past.
