Summary

Excavation in advance of development recorded two undated ditches, an undated pit, and an extraction pit or pond of possible post medieval date. The ditches share alignment with field boundaries visible as cropmarks in the field to the south (NHER 42052) and may form part of the same group of linear features. One of the pits was visible as a depression within the landscape and is depicted on historic maps. This feature may have originally been used for extraction and allowed to collect water to form a pond before being deliberately back-filled. It contained an assemblage of Victorian and later pottery and glass.

Map

April 2012. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of nine trenches prior to construction of a new reservoir recorded two undated ditches in the southwest of the site and two large pits in the east. The ditches appear to run parallel to trackways visible on 1988 aerial photography (S2), but they are also on the same alignment as possible medieval and post medieval field boundaries visible as cropmarks in the field to the south (NHER 42052) and may form part of the same group of linear features. One of the pits recorded in the east of the site was visible as a depression within the landscape and is marked as a depression on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map (S3) and as a pit on Bryant's 1826 map (S4). This feature may have originally been used for extraction and allowed to collect water to form a pond before being deliberately back-filled. It contained an assemblage of Victorian and later pottery and glass.
