Summary

A rapid earthwork identification survey in 2011 located former extraction pits with a probable access trackway. A subsequent desk-based survey using aerial photographs and imagery from a lidar survey flown in 2015 has confirmed this interpretation. No quarry is marked here on late 19th and early 20th century Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting that the extraction took place in the modern period.

February 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The area of extraction and associated trackway described above are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs, such as (S2), and lidar imagery (S3). Neither is depicted on either the Ordnance Survey First Edition 6-inch map (S4), or the Second Edition 25-inch map (S5), and both are probably of modern date. The trackway was in use in the 1940s and remains in use today; the quarry overlaps with a large Second World War pit or emplacement (part of NHER 61543). None of the site has been transcribed for the project, but the mapped extent of this record has been amended to reflect the features as visible on the lidar imagery [1].
