Full Description
January 2013.
Cropmarks of rectangular enclosures are visible on Google Earth imagery from 2006 (S1). These probably represent a Roman farmstead with an associated field system. Numerous objects have been recovered from this area since 1980 (NHER 16738) which support this interpretation.
The cropmarks appear to represent a series of rectilinear enclosures aligned NNE-SSW. One enclosure which is cut by the modern road measures c.100 m on its longest side by c.80 m at its shortest and may be the focus for the possible farmstead. A smaller rectilinear enclosure adjoins this to the north east and also appears to have a further annexe to the north east. Larger more rectangular enclosures to the west may represent fields.
The complex is cut by more recent field boundaries as well as the modern road.

The interpretation of this site as a Roman settlement may be complicated by the relationship between the cropmarks and the road. This road has been interpreted as a Roman road (NHER 7598) leading from Brampton to Thorpe St Andrew, although evidence for this is scarce. The cropmarks do appear to be cut by the road and on a different alignment, consequently they may be prehistoric in date, although this is not supported by the artefactual evidence.
