Summary

The cropmarks of probable medieval to post medieval field boundaries and drainage features are visible on aerial photographs. The cropmarks reveal a series of field boundaries and land drains, the majority of which were not mapped, despite not being depicted on the 1900 Great Ellingham Tithe map, as it was felt to be largely post medieval in date and primarily agricultural. However a number of smaller enclosures and field/land boundaries within the western part of the site were mapped as they were considered to be of greater archaeological significance. Although the alignment and positioning of these enclosures and boundaries would indicate that they are likely to be medieval to post medieval in date, it must be noted that this site is located in close proximity to two known Roman sites (NHER 9082-3) and Roman material has also been found nearby (NHER 50469), and it is therefore feasible that some of the cropmarks are of Roman date.

Map

January 2013. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of probable medieval to post medieval field boundaries and drainage features are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 0124 9544. The cropmarks reveal a series of field boundaries and land drains, the majority of which were not mapped, despite not being depicted on the 1900 Great Ellingham Tithe map (S4), as it was felt to be largely post medieval in date and primarily agricultural. However a number of smaller enclosures and field/land boundaries within the western part of the site were mapped (S2-S3) as they were considered to be of greater archaeological significance. A relatively well-defined L-shaped ditch and/or drain (S1) was also included within the mapping (other more minor drainage features in this area were excluded) as it was felt that it could feasibly represent something more substantial/significant than a drainage ditch.
