Summary

The cropmarks of a possible boundary ditch and/or drainage ditch of uncertain archaeological significance. Although it is possible that these cropmarks relate to elements of the modern land drains, it was mapped due to the possibility that it may represent the remains of a boundary ditch potentially relating to a continuation of the Ellingham Road/Attleborough Road. See NHER 58564 for discussion of this being the former line of a Roman road.

Map

The cropmarks of a possible boundary ditch and/or drainage ditch of uncertain archaeological significance (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 0321 9631. Although it is possible that these cropmarks relate to elements of the modern land drains, it was mapped due to the possibility that it may represent the remains of a boundary ditch potentially relating to a continuation of the Ellingham Road/Attleborough Road. The modern line of the road now follows a similar route to the south, but prior to this the road kinked round to the south. See NHER 58564 where it is tentatively suggested that the broadly straight alignment of the Attleborough road which if extended runs alongside a Roman cemetery (NHER 4257) and a Roman building remains (NHER 9095). If the projecting line of this hypothetical Roman road is extended to the northwest it joins up with Green Lane, a road formerly running alongside Goose Common. While there is currently little actual evidence for the presence of a Roman road, it is feasible one branched off from the recorded section of probable Roman road (NHER 33952) near Attleborough Hall. The Great Ellingham parish appears to have a significant cluster of Roman sites and buildings, for example see NHER 9082-3, so it may be expected to have some evidence for contemporary communications lines within the vicinity.
