Summary

The earthworks and vegetation marks of possible ditched enclosures and other possible features are visible on aerial photographs to the south of original route of the Ellingham Road. Although it must be stated that some of the features mapped are of uncertain archaeological origin and may well relate to relatively recent activity within the field. However due to these possible features being located within the vicinity of Roman building material and/or a wall (NHER 9095), they were included on the mapping. The remainder of the features included within the mapping were visible on aerial photographs in 1946 as slight earthworks and are possibly medieval to post medieval enclosure ditches, perhaps similar to that mapped to the north (NHER 58562). Although it is possible that some, or all, of these ditch-like features relate to drainage.

Map

January 2013. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and vegetation marks of possible ditched enclosures and other possible features are visible on aerial photographs to the south of original route of the Ellingham Road (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 0332 9614. Although it must be stated that some of the features mapped are of uncertain archaeological origin, in particular those ditch-like features recorded within the eastern part of the site, which were visible in 1970 (S2). These were not detectable on the earlier aerial photographs (S1) and may well relate to relatively recent activity within the field. However due to these possible features being located within the vicinity of Roman building material and/or a wall (NHER 9095), they were included on the mapping.
The remainder of the features included within the mapping were visible on aerial photographs in 1946 as slight earthworks (S1) and are possibly medieval to post medieval enclosure ditches, perhaps similar to that mapped to the north (NHER 58562). Although it is possible that some, or all, of these ditch-like features relate to drainage.
S. Horlock (NMP), 24 January 2013.

April 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site to south-west of Highcroft.
The four trenches excavated were all positioned to coincide with the recorded earthworks. There was however no evidence for associated sub-surface remains, casting further doubt on the archaeological significance of the mapped features.
See report (S3) and NHER 65572 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 18 May 2022.
