Summary

The earthworks of a series of ditched enclosures and boundaries, which are likely to relate to medieval settlement, are visible on aerial photographs at Manor Farm, Great Ellingham. The former medieval manorial moated site is also located to the south (NHER 34571). Manor Farm, located to the immediate northeast, is early seventeenth century in date (NHER 35184). The site is also located relatively close to the southern edge of Deopham Stolland common land, as depicted on Faden’s 1797 map, and it may have previously been common-edge, depending on how much the extent of the common has altered during the post medieval period.

Map

November 2012. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a series of ditched enclosures and boundaries, which are likely to relate to medieval settlement, are visible on aerial photographs at Manor Farm, Great Ellingham (S1-S6). The site is centred on TM 0216 9812. The former medieval manorial moated site is also located to the south (NHER 34571). Manor Farm, located to the immediate northeast, is early seventeenth century in date (NHER 35184). The site is also located relatively close to the southern edge of Deopham Stolland common land, as depicted on Faden’s 1797 map (S7), and it may have previously been common-edge, depending on how much the extent of the common has altered during the post medieval period.
The site consists of a series of fairly substantial boundary ditches and ditched enclosures, and containing at least one possible building platform at TM 0211 9817. The curving boundary to the north of the site is depictedon the Great Ellingham Tithe map (S8). It is possible that additional medieval to post medieval earthworks exist however due to recent activity on the site in the 1940s (S1-S2), it was hard to confidently identify further features. A number of channels were omitted from the mapping within the southern part of the site as it was felt that they were drainage ditches. The site is still earthwork as late as 1994 (S5) and the latest Google Earth imagery (2006, S6) indicates that the site is now covered by plantation.
