September-October 2021. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Survey of arable land that once formed part of Oxburgh Hall Park, prior to it being put back to grassed parkland. This survey was undertaken by National Trust volunteers and local metal-detecting groups. Finds recovered in this field (Thornhams) included:
1 undatable silver coin, 4 copper alloy wire fragments, 3 unidentified copper alloy objects, 1 iron mount, 32 iron nails, 1 iron ?pin, 37 unidentified iron objects, 2 lead ?tokens and 4 unidentified lead objects.
5 ?Early Neolithic narrow flint flakes/blade-like flakes.
2 ?Neolithic flint scrapers, 1 backed blade and 1 piercer.
13 Neolithic/Bronze Age retouched flint flakes, 5 cores, 36 flakes and 4 irregular pieces.
1 ?Bronze Age/Iron Age unidentified copper alloy object.
214 ?prehistoric burnt flints.
1 Roman pottery sherd.
1 Late Saxon pin.
3 medieval coins, 1 jetton, 3 mounts, 1 buckle, 1 ring, 2 iron horseshoes and 2 lead weights.
1 ?medieval buckle and 1 iron horseshoe.
1 medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragment, 1 iron axehead, 2 unidentified iron ?agricultural objects and 1 lead weight.
7 post-medieval coins (1 silver and 6 copper alloy), 1 jetton, 1 token, 8 pottery sherds, 3 clay tobacco pipe fragments, 20 buttons, 2 buckles, 1 crotal bell, 24 iron horseshoes, 2 iron horseshoe nails, 2 iron probable horse harness buckles, 2 iron hammers, 2 iron ?fishing weights, 1 iron stirrup, 1 iron washer, 1 iron hook, 1 iron fitting, 10 iron unidentified ?agricultural objects, 1 lead ferrule, 1 lead weight, 2 musket balls and 2 lead shot.
1 post-medieval/modern glass vessel fragment.
There was a notable concentration of burnt flints in the western central part of the field. The site’s proximity to the River Gadder means it is possible these represent part of a scatter of prehistoric 'pot boilers' – i.e. waste material from an activity where hot flints were used to heat or boil water. Another concentration was noted in the field to the east (NHER 66884).
This site also produced a fairly large number of ceramic building material fragments. The exact date and composition of this material isn’t recorded in detail, although it appears the assemblage was predominantly of post-medieval and modern date.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. Final version awaited.
Extended to whole field. Previous extent mapped as Context 1.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 May 2023.
