Map

November 1999. Trial Trenching. Contexts 2 to 29.
Nineteen evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of mineral extraction.
Three trenches in the east and southeast of the site revealed archaeological features. These included a possible segment of a ring ditch, two pits, and other ditches or linear features (one perhaps prehistoric). A small number of prehistoric flint flakes and blades were the only finds recovered. These flints were most likely of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).

The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.175).

June-July 2000 and May 2001. Strip, Map and Sample Excavation and Watching Brief. Contexts 50 to 96.
Archaeological features were limited to two linear features and a few small pits or tree holes of possible prehistoric date along with several post holes of relatively recent date. The possible ring ditch recorded in the preceeding evaluation proved to extend only slightly further than previously recorded, and this was determined not to be a ring ditch. Twenty-four pieces of struck flint were recovered (eighteen from the topsoil) including two small cores, three blades, a likely piercer, and two retouched flakes. These are likely to be of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4) and (S5).

January and July 2002 and April 2003. Watching Brief. Context numbers 100 to 142 used.
Three post medieval ditched field boundaries were recorded, as well as several undated pits and post holes. Finds consisted of two prehistoric flint flakes, one sherd of Late Saxon Thetford-type ware pottery, post medieval pan tile and brick, a small fragment of a lava quern, and a fragment of a limestone medieval chamfered mullion. A small number of post-medieval metal objects were also found.
See report (S6) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S7) and (S8).
Previously recorded under NHER 3018.
A. Cattermole (NLA), 5 October 2004. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 August 2013.
