Summary

Three post medieval or early modern ditches and one undated ditch were recorded during excavation of two trial trenches. These features are likely associated with 18th and 19th century occupation of The Firs farm, which is depicted on 19th century maps but has since been demolished. Finds recovered from the ditches include a few sherds of late 18th to late 19th century pottery and a small quantity of residual medieval peg tile and brick from a nearby kiln (see NHER 58798).

Map

December 2011-February 2012. Trial Trenching.
Three post medieval or early modern ditches and one undated ditch were recorded during excavation of two trial trenches. Finds recovered from these ditches include a few sherds of late 18th to late 19th century pottery, a small quantity of residual medieval peg tile and brick from a nearby kiln (see NHER 58798), and a few fragments of animal bone. The ditches are located adjacent to several farm buildings known as The Firs which are depicted on the 1839 tithe map (S1) and the first (S2) and second edition Ordnance Survey maps but have since been demolished. The ditches are probably associated with 18th and 19th century occupation of this farm.
