Summary

The site of a large gravel pit that was open from the late 18th to the early 19th century. Although not of particular interest in its own right, this pit is the suggested source of a number of Palaeolithic handaxes that are recorded as being found in the West Tofts area during the early 20th century (see NHER 5119).

Map

A large area of former gravel extraction, adjacent to Gravel Pit cottages. According to (S1) this is a likely provenance for a number of Palaeolithic handaxes that are held by the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and Ipswich Museum (NHER 5119). This is however by no means certain and it is also possible that these objects were actually found at the nearby Swell Pit (NHER 5131) or elsewhere. See (S2).

When last examined these pits were still visible, but overgrown with mature trees. One was in use as a rubbish tip (S1).
