Summary

This area was subject to several phases of archaeological evaluation between 2011 and 2019, with little in the way of significant remains revealed. An initial geophysical survey in the southern portion of the field identified a possible ring ditch and enclosure of potential prehistoric or Roman date. However, subsequent trial trenching recorded only one undated ditch in this southern area and only additional undated and post-medieval ditches in the northern and eastern portion of the investigated area. Further trenching at the northern end of the site in 2018 had entirely negatively results and a geophysical survey of a block immediately to the south in 2019 recorded only a single linear anomaly.

Civil Parish HETHERSETT, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

March 2011. Geophysical survey. Field 6.
Geophysical survey in the southern portion of this field recorded two curvilinear anomalies and one linear response on the western edge of the surveyed area. These have been interpreted as a possible ring ditch and a small, d-shaped enclosure of possible Prehistoric or Roman date.
A large area of magnetic disturbance located to the east of these features may indicate a geological feature or a former quarry and a short north-south negative linear anomaly to the east likely relates to a track depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1).
See unpublished report (S2) for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 21 May 2013.

February 2012. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Field 6; Trenches 10-36).
The 27 trenches excavated at this location recorded one post-medieval boundary ditch in the north of the field and a series of undated ditches towards the southern end of the field. These were primarily aligned north-south or east-west, parallel to current field boundaries, and likely represent former field divisions.
Geophysical survey in 2011 had identified several possible features in the south-western corner of the site and three trenches were placed to investigate these anomalies. A ditch recorded in the northern-most trench appears to correspond with the possible ring ditch, but the other geophysical responses were likely caused by variations observed in the natural deposits.
See report (S3) for further information.
H. Hamilton (HES), 10 May 2013.

September 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of route of proposed new access road (Trenches 1 and 2).
Two trenches excavated at the northern end of the field revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2021.

May 2019. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Area 3).
This survey of a block in the northern half of the field identified a single linear north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomalies of uncertain nature.
The majority of the other anomalies were either of probable agricultural origin or likely to have been caused by ferrous debris.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 May 2021.
