Summary

A fieldwalking survey in 2011 identified evidence of human activity in this area from the Mesolithic to the post-medieval period. Worked flint recovered from this area includes cores, blades, and scrapers. The assemblage has been identified as broadly Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date but also includes one Mesolithic distal blade. Survey in the surrounding area has confirmed that activity during these periods was centred to the east (NHER 58844) and continued into this field and the field to the north (NHER 58842). Prehistoric pottery finds were limited to two sherds of Bronze Age or Iron Age date, and activity during the Roman and Early to Middle Saxon periods was represented by only a single fragment of pottery of each date. A small quantity of medieval pottery and ceramic building material and a moderate quantity of post medieval pottery, clay pipe stems, and pantile was also recovered. This material was likely re-deposited during arable farming activities. An unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares within the assemblage likely indicates night-soiling from Norwich or a nearby inn. Metal-detecting in 2016 recovered Bronze Age/Iron Age, Roman and medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman coins, a Roman spoon fragment and medieval buckles.

Map

March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 9.
A wide range of finds dating from the Mesolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which covered eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
Flint finds from this field consisted of 225 flakes, 13 blades, a triangular flint knife, a piercer, and an unidentified flint tool. This assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, but also includes a Mesolithic distal blade. The flint scatter represents the western the edge of a concentration noted in Field 10 to the east (NHER 58844) which also extends slightly into Field 8 (NHER 61674).
Two sherds of Bronze Age or Iron Age pottery (possibly Middle to Late Iron Age), one sherd Roman pottery (possibly 2nd-3rd century), and one sherd Early to Middle Saxon pottery were identified.
A small quantity of medieval pottery (primarily medieval sandy ware); moderate quantities of medieval to post medieval roof tile, floor or wall tile, and brick; late 17th to early 18th century pantile; a scatter of 17th to 19th century clay pipe fragments; a moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery; and a low to moderate scatter of 19th century pottery was also collected. The post-medieval pottery assemblage contained an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
