Full Description
March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 10.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which covered eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
Flint finds from this field consisted of 450 flakes, 26 blades, 3 scrapers, a leaf-shaped arrowhead, and an unfinished tool. This assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age and represents the largest concentration of worked flint within the surveyed area. Prehistoric pottery finds were limited to three sherds of Bronze Age or Iron Age date (possibly Middle to Late Iron Age).
36 sherds Roman pottery, possibly 2nd - 3rd century date, and one fragment of Roman tile were recovered. This material was concentrated towards the south-western corner of the study area and is the only significant concentration of Roman material recorded within the overall study area.
Late Saxon finds were limited to seven sherds of pottery.
A small quantity of medieval pottery (primarily medieval sandy ware); moderate to high quantities of medieval to post medieval roof tile, floor or wall tile, and brick; late 17th to early 18th century pantile; a scatter of 17th to 19th century clay pipe fragments; a moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery; and a low to moderate scatter of 19th century pottery were also recovered. The post-medieval pottery assemblage contained an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
See report (S1) for further information.
