Summary

A systematic fieldwalking survey of this area has identified a wide range of finds dating to the Prehistoric, medieval, and post medieval periods. The worked flint assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age and includes flakes, blades, and cores. A small quantity of medieval pottery and ceramic building material was recovered from the northern portion of the field, and a moderate quantity post medieval finds including pottery, pantile, brick, and clay pipe fragments was recovered throughout. The medieval and post medieval objects were likely re-deposited during arable farming activities, and an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares within the assemblage likely indicates night-soiling from Norwich or a nearby inn.

Map

March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 11.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which covered eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
The flint assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic to Early Bronze Age and consisted of two cores, 111 flakes, 9 blades, and one hammerstone.
Only a small quantity of medieval pottery was collected. This was mostly concentrated in the northern portion of the field and was primarily medieval sandy ware. Moderate quantities of medieval to post medieval roof tile, floor or wall tile, and brick as, late 17th to early 18th century pantile, a scatter of 17th to 19th century clay pipe fragments, a moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery, and a sparse to moderate scatter of 19th century pottery were also recovered. The post-medieval pottery assemblage contained an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields and this field contained the highest concentration. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
