Full Description
22 August 1979. Field Visit.
Site visited by E. Rose; under rough grass. Note: "Toot" is Saxon for lookout place and elsewhere is applied to prominent hilltops and barrows. This site is flat and even before afforestation had restricted views; does this therefore indicate a barrow site?
1983.
A. Lawson (NAU) confirms he has seen a 17th century map at Cockley Cley Hall showing a barrow here.
E. Rose (NAU), 24 March 1983.
In fact the above was a transcript of 1579 (call it Howe Hill). See rough copy and transcript in file.
2013.
It should be noted that the transcript mentioned above does not appear to contain any reference to a barrow on the site. The evidence for such a monument in this location should therefore be seen as tenuous at best.
P. Watkins (HES), 3 June 2013.
