Summary

Three ditches were recorded in the northern half of this site during monitoring of groundworks for an extension to an existing warehouse. The ditches contained several struck flint flakes and most likely date to the Later Prehistoric or Roman period. Further flint flakes and a sherd of Late Bronze Age to Iron Age pottery were recovered from the subsoil, indicating low levels of activity in this area during the late Prehistoric period.

Map

September-October 2012. Watching Brief.
Three ditches were recorded in the northern half of this site during monitoring of groundworks for an extension to an existing warehouse. The first ditch was on a south-west to north-east alignment and contained two Later Prehistoric flint flakes (one of which may have been used as a scraper) and one flint shatter piece within its fill. The other two ditches were on a roughly north-west to south-east alignment and appeared to cross slightly, but the relationship between them remains uncertain. The fill of these two ditches could not be distinguished and contained one Later Prehistoric flint flake. The alignment of the two sets of ditches suggests that they may have intersected. The ditches do not correspond any field boundary alignments depicted on the Tithe map, indicating a pre-19th century date, and they are most likely associated with Later Prehistoric or Roman activity.
A further five pieces of Later Prehistoric struck flint (including one possible scraper) and one sherd of heavily abraded Late Bronze Age to Iron Age pottery (possibly Early to Middle Iron Age) were recovered from the subsoil in the northern portion of the site.
Varying levels of prior disturbance were observed across the remainder of the investigated area.
