Nos 46 to 47 North Quay is a two-storey building with an attic and cellar. Constructed of a mixture of brick and flint and rendered, it is divided into two units with 19th century shop fronts. No 47 has carved consoles at each end of the fascia, but No 46 has a much plainer front which is likely of a later date.
Three main phases of construction were identified during a visual inspection of the building. The original building was constructed in the early 17th century and consisted of two rooms facing onto North Quay with a central chimney stack heating the south room. Very soon afterwards, the building was extended to the rear to create a double-pile plan form, with central chimney heating both north and south rooms.
Evidence of fire damage was observed which likely occurred in the late 18th or early 19th century and may have required rebuilding of the roof in No 46. In the 19th century a further brick-built extension was added to the rear, doubling the size of the building. The chimney stack of No 46 was rebuilt at this time and the ground floor was altered to create the shop fronts.
The majority of the gable wall of No 46 was rebuilt with breeze blocks in the 20th century and the windows have been replaced. The cellar beneath No 47 is now mostly filled with sand.
