Summary

An examination of various privately-held collections identified a range of prehistoric objects recorded as being from the area of these two field. Although there is a degree of possible overlap it appears that the bulk of this material is distinct from the finds previously recorded as coming from the individual fields (NHER 5159 and NHER 17193). A large number of worked flints were identified, including diagnostic pieces of Mesolitic, Neolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. A range of other objects were also present include a saddle quern, worked bone implements, and sherds of Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age pottery.

Pre 1996. Stray Find.
An examination of various privately-held collections by F. Healy identified a range of prehistoric objects that are recorded as having been recovered from this pair of adjacent fields. These finds appear to be mostly distinct from those recorded elsewhere as being from either the western field (NHER 5159; Curtis Field 104A; old O.S field 321) or the eastern field (NHER 17193; Curtis Field 104; old O.S field 322).

The material recorded as being from this area included a large number of finds in the collection of [1]. It is possible that some of the objects listed below are in fact finds that are also recorded under NHER 5159 (having been previously brought to the NCM for identification). It has been noted where this is most likely.
The worked flints included:
5 Mesolithic microliths (4 obliquely truncated points, 1 rod).
1 Mesolithic/Neolithic petit tranchet arrowhead.
1 Neolithic laurel leaf.
1 Neolithic ground axe fragment.
47 Neolithic leaf arrowheads.
19 Neolithic chisel arrowheads.
7 Neolithic oblique arrowheads.
1 Neolithic hollow-based arrowhead (same as arrowhead recorded under NHER 5159?).
4 Neolithic triangular arrowheads.
24 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowheads (including 1 Green Low type, 4 Conygar types, 1 Ballyclare types and 1 single-barbed).
3 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age tanged arrowheads.
5 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze plano-convex knives.
1 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age dagger fragment.
5 ?arrowhead blanks.
2 single-platform blade cores.
7 multi-platform blade cores.
2 core fragments.
2 fragments of irregular waste.
78 flakes.
33 blades.
487 scrapers.
13 borers.
34 scale-flaked knives.
1 discoidal knife.
1 sickle fragment.
2 backed knives.
2 notched flakes.
1 saw (denticulate).
21 serrated pieces.
126 misc. retouched pieces.
13 fabricators.
10 hammerstones.
It was noted that the majority of the cores were small and heavily corticated with blade scars, suggesting a Mesolithic date. The petit tranchet and five of the serrated pieces were also heavily corticated suggesting that these, along with with the cores and the blade all represented a distinct Mesolithic component to this assemblage.

Various stone objects were also present including:
1 saddle quern (sandstone) (same as object recorded under NHER 5159?).
5 rubbers (?sandstone).
1 perforated disc (?spindle whorl).

A number of pottery sherds were also present including:
2 Early Neolithic bowl sherds.
1 Beaker sherd.
2 indeterminate Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age sherds.
2 indeterminate prehistoric sherds.

This collection also included a bone spatula and a bone point.

This assemblage possibly includes a small number of the items that had previously been reported to the NCM as having been found in the western field (NHER 5159).

Finds in the collection held by [2] include:
1 ?Mesolithic blade core. Small and heavily corticated.
2 blades.
4 scrapers.
1 borer.
2 scale-flaked knives (one finder's Collection No. 107).
2 serrated pieces.

See (S1) for further details. The potentially Mesolithic objects are also noted in (S2).
